Landscaping by city

Landscaping in Florida is irrigation, drainage, and plant choice pretending to be a lawn. Turf here is mostly warm-season grass, and St. Augustine carries most of the lawns. It wants water on a schedule, and then it wants you to back off when the rainy pattern arrives and fungus takes the blades. Sandy ground drinks and wilts. Flat ground ponds against the slab. The coast wants plants that tolerate salt spray. The interior wants plants that tolerate heat and a hard afternoon dump of rain. Start with the city and the job: mow, drainage, new beds, trees, or irrigation.

Irrigation is what the lawn actually depends on, and it is also a way to wreck a house. Heads that spray the wall, a zone that runs into a rainy week, and a valve that sticks open all push moisture where you do not want it. Reclaimed water, where the neighborhood has it, is not drinking water and must stay off the hose bibs. Say whether you are repairing heads, adding a zone, or staring at a controller you do not trust. Grade belongs in the same breath. Soil against the siding, or a swale aimed at the door, is a building problem.

Trees and palms are not shrubs. Live oaks throw limbs onto roofs and feed roots into old sewer lines. A palm thinned into a feather duster is more likely to fail in a wind than a palm with a sensible head of green. Hardwood pruning and palm pruning are different skills. Say whether you need a limb off the roof, clearance from the service drop, or a removal and a stump. Say whether debris must leave the property. Debris on the ground is cleanup. Weight still in the canopy is a different risk.

Chinch bugs and fungal patches can look like a mowing problem. Mole crickets show up in sandy lawns. Mention what you see, and do not expect a mowing visit to be a termite inspection. If a claim is open because a tree hit the house, the yard work and the policy conversation still need to stay straight. Wind damage and flood are different. Describe the yard you have, the city, and whether water sits after rain. Call the number on this page.
