Service types

Window replacement

New units in existing openings, including insert replacements and full-frame replacements.

Questions to ask

  • Is this an insert into the existing frame, or a full-frame replacement?
  • Who repairs interior and exterior trim after the unit is set?
  • What is the lead time, and is the price locked to a specific product line?

Energy-efficient windows

How U-factor, solar heat gain, and air leakage are labeled, without a promised bill change.

Questions to ask

  • Which NFRC numbers are you quoting: U-factor, SHGC, and air leakage?
  • Are those numbers for the whole unit or only the glass?
  • Does the bid rely on a utility rebate, and what happens to the price if the rebate is denied?

Window installation

Flashing, shimming, insulation of the gap, and how the opening sheds water.

Questions to ask

  • How is the sill flashed, and is the nailing flange integrated with the weather barrier?
  • What insulation goes in the gap around the frame?
  • Is a lead-safe work practice required for this house?

Window repair

Hardware, balances, sashes, and fogged insulated-glass units.

Questions to ask

  • Can the sash or the insulated unit be replaced without replacing the frame?
  • Are parts available for this brand, or is the repair a one-time fabrication?
  • Is the fogged-glass warranty still in force, and who honors it?

For homeowners

  • Insert replacements are faster and leave the old frame in place. Full-frame replacements expose the rough opening, which is useful when the frame is rotten and wasteful when it is sound.
  • A lower U-factor means the unit resists heat flow better in the rating test. It is not a promise that your utility bill will fall by a specific amount.
  • Ask who warrants leaks at the flange. Many glass warranties exclude installation.

Questions

What do I say when I call?

How many windows, which rooms, and whether the frames are soft. We'll take the rest.

Do I need a price before I call?

No. Call first. A real price comes after someone sees the openings.
