More on Solar

Solar in Colorado Springs has to survive wind first and hail second, on a roof that may already be lifted, bruised, or full of pine debris. That is a different caution from a Denver hail roof in a tighter city grid. Downslope gusts are an uplift problem for any attachment. Hail is an impact problem for the covering and for the modules. Foothill slopes and open east-side roofs do not see the same wind. Shade comes from pines and from the mountain itself in the late day, not only from a street tree. Snow and freeze-thaw still visit. An aerial photo has not seen a soft deck, a needle-packed valley, or a ridge the last wind started to peel.

Ask for someone on the roof. Ask the age of the covering and whether wind or hail damage gets repaired before any bracket is set. Ask the fastening and flashing details, and who is responsible if a penetration leaks during a sideways storm. Ask how the array comes off for the next roof. Ask how snow and ice will leave the eaves. Ask whether needles will pile against the low edge of the array and hold moisture. A hot attic and iced gutters are a roof problem the modules will not solve.

Open the panel. Say whether the service is already loaded. Ask for the module and the inverter to be named. Ask who sees production and who you call when a section goes quiet after a storm. Ask who pulls the permit and who files the interconnection, and whether the system waits for permission to operate. Ask whether you will own the equipment. Wind at your actual wall of the city matters more than a regional average.

Bring the roof, the wind direction, and the last hail. Leave the bill pitch out. Call the number on this page.
