Call a trade

Columbus is inland Ohio, and the winter proves it. Snow falls, melts, and comes back as ice rather than sitting in a lake-effect pile for weeks. The cold is real enough to burst a pipe and heave a walk. Summer turns humid and parks heat in the attic. Spring and early summer bring wind and hail across a flat metro. The Scioto and the Olentangy, plus the clay under the lots, decide where rain goes.

Older streets still carry brick, plaster, and bungalows close to those rivers. Additions hold ice in the valley against the original wall. Newer subdivisions farther out bring attic ducts, builder windows, and irrigation that has to be emptied before a hard night. Both sit on soils that hold water against a basement. A wet basement here is often grade, not a story you borrow from a lakeshore. Say which house you have.

The calendar is a swing, not a siege. Heat gets tested on the first hard night and again when a thaw refreezes an outside wall. Roofs get tested by hail and by melt that finds a tired flashing. Cooling gets tested when upstairs air stays heavy. Mice arrive with the cold. Ants and termites stay a warm-soil question. Every hard rain asks if the lot drains or leans at the foundation.

Start with Columbus, the trade, and what failed. A hail bruise is not a furnace that will not stay lit. A fogged builder window is not a deductible conversation unless the same storm opened the roof. If a claim is possible, leave the damage and photograph it from the ground. Do not wait on a long gentle month. The city thaws and refreezes instead of offering one.

Match the trade to the room, the roof, the yard, or the policy in front of you. Say older street or new subdivision so the failure is not a guess. This is not a lake winter, and the call should not pretend it is. Pick the trade and call.
