Call a trade

Memphis sits on the bluff above the Mississippi, hotter and more humid for longer than the hills to the east. Nashville ices and steps up and down limestone. This city sprawls flatter, breathes river air, and runs the cooling season until people from the basin think it should have ended. Afternoons build serious thunderstorms. Hail and straight-line wind are ordinary, not a novelty. Winter is short. A hard freeze still arrives and finds pipes and habits that spent the year in heat. Basements are scarce. The water table and the delta soils argue against them. That single fact changes leaks, baths, and where a heater sits.

Midtown bungalows in Cooper-Young, Central Gardens, and Evergreen carry older roofs, older wood windows, and crawls. East Memphis and the outward neighborhoods add ranches and later slabs under longer sun. The Wolf River bottoms and low streets take water the bluff itself does not. Termites and roaches enjoy the heat. Shingles age from the sun even in a quiet year. A call copied from a hill-and-ice city will miss the bluff, the soft aquifer water, and the length of summer. Say Memphis like a river city.

People call about a ceiling stain after a thunderburst, a condenser that has run since spring, a bath that never dries, swarmers at a slab, a yard that holds water, and a policy question when wind opens a slope. Shade from mature oaks in Midtown is real. It is not a canopy that defines the whole metro the way heat does. The bluff stays up. The streets below it do not. Know which one you are on before you describe water in the house.

Have the limits sheet and the deductible when you are asking about coverage, and name wind, hail, a tree, or water that rose. Have the symptom and the shutoff if this is the house. Photos of curled shingles, a wet crawl, or a storm-bruised cabinet help. Do not open with an ice-storm story unless this week actually froze. Most weeks, the problem is heat, humidity, or a violent afternoon.

Memphis will stay hot after the thunder passes. Pick the trade and call.
