Call a trade

Burlington has a short season for outside work, and the lake does not make that season generous. Mud locks the ground after the snowpack from Lake Champlain lets go. Then there is a stretch of weeks when roofs, trim, yards, and outdoor equipment can actually be touched. Then frost returns and the calendar slams shut. Old North End houses, Hill Section houses, the New North End, and the South End all have to use that same narrow stretch, and they do not have the same buildings.

Wood frames on tight Old North End lots, larger houses on the hill, and later houses toward the New North End fail on different schedules, but the exterior trades collide on one clock. A roof that should have been stripped in June is still leaking in January under lake-effect snow. Window trim that needed paint before the cold is now soft. A yard in the Intervale holds water the hill sheds in an afternoon. Waiting is how a small job becomes a closed-up season.

Winters off the lake are long and snowy, but the sales fact is the window, not a slogan about cold. Interior work can be talked through while the ground is frozen. Exterior work has to be chosen before the frost. Heat, pipes, and pests do not wait for June, which is why those calls should happen when the failure shows, not when the sidewalks clear. Say which kind of problem you have so the timing is honest.

If you are calling about a policy, know the deductible and whether this is a claim or a question about coverage. Ice, wind off the lake, and a slow leak are different stories. Flood and backup near the lake and the river lowlands are often outside a standard homeowners policy. Ask about your pages.

Bring the neighborhood and whether the work is inside or racing the season outside. Roof, windows, bath, heat, pests, pipes, the yard, or gear on a roof that will be under snow again soon. Pick the trade and call.
